Your account, plan and billing
Settings, billing, usage caps, trial allowances, organization seats, data export and account deletion.
Applies to: Everyone
Profile and avatar
The Profile section at the top of Settings shows your signed-in email and your avatar. The avatar draws its initials from your display name, or from your email if no name is set.
Type a display name and select Save. The name appears in greetings and on your avatar across devices. It is optional: your email is always the sign-in identity.
Your language
Pick English or French from the toggle. The choice saves to your profile, applies across every device you sign in on, and switches the emails Rhetoric sends you.
Your password
Change your password without a reset link by typing a new one in Settings and selecting Change. The minimum is eight characters. If you are locked out, use Forgot password on the sign-in page instead.
Billing and plan status
The Billing section shows your current plan label and a status pill. The plan label names your tier: Free trial, Rhetoric Pro monthly, Rhetoric Pro annual, Rhetoric Premium monthly, or Rhetoric Premium annual. The status pill is a colored badge that tells you where things stand at a glance.
- active: your subscription or trial is current.
- payment retrying: a renewal charge failed and Stripe is retrying automatically. You keep full access for seven days while retries run.
- canceled, access until period end: you canceled, but the time you already paid for is still yours.
- ended: the subscription lapsed. Your account is now read-only.
- used: every trial allowance has been spent (trial accounts only).
- none: no active subscription on this account.
Next to the pill you may see a date. That is when your current access period ends, either at the next renewal or at the end of a canceled period.
Manage billing and the Stripe portal
If you pay directly (not through an organization), the billing card shows a Manage billing button. It opens a secure Stripe portal where you can update your card, download invoices and receipts, switch between plans, or cancel.
Rhetoric never sees your card number. All payment details stay on Stripe's secure page.
- Select Manage billing in the Billing section.
- The Stripe portal opens in a new page. Update your card, view invoices, change your plan, or cancel from there.
- When you are done, close the portal tab to return to Settings.
Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you paid for. You keep full access until then.
Trial accounts see an Upgrade button instead of Manage billing. It leads to the pricing page.
See plans and pricingOrganization seat billing
If your access comes through an organization, the billing card shows View organization instead of Manage billing. Your organization admin handles the plan and payment.
On the Organization page, you see a read-only card with your org name, plan tier, and renewal date. Practice data stays private to you: your admin manages seats, never your speeches, transcripts, sessions, or scores.
Trial allowances
This section appears only for free trial accounts.
See plans and pricingA free trial gives you a fixed set of allowances for life. They never reset and they never expire. The Your free trial section in Settings shows what you have left.
- 1 Full Audit, on a speech of up to 4,000 words.
- 1 freestyle session with its assessment.
- 3 live voice debates, each up to 60 seconds of connection. The first two include a judge's verdict. The third does not.
Each row shows its status: remaining, in progress, or used. When every allowance is spent, the status pill changes to used and the account works like a lapsed subscription: your library stays readable and exportable, but the editor, practice modes, and AI features ask you to choose a plan.
Usage this cycle
The usage panel appears on Pro and Premium, not on trial accounts.
See plans and pricingPaid plans show a Usage this cycle section with an overall fair-use bar and per-feature meters. Everything resets at the start of each billing cycle.
- The overall bar reflects your month-to-date usage as a percentage. It is a fair-use allowance that keeps the service fast and sustainable.
- Below it, individual meters show enhanced voice tracking minutes, rhetorical audits, coaching cards, debate turns, originality checks, and every other metered feature.
- Premium accounts also see a live voice debate meter showing minutes used out of 60 per month.
Live voice debate minutes (60 per month) appear only on Premium.
See plans and pricingIf you hit a limit doing real work, contact support. The limits are generous and exist to keep the platform reliable, not to constrain honest use.
Export and deletion
The Your data section at the bottom of Settings gives you two controls: Export my data and Delete account.
- Select Export my data. You receive a single JSON file containing your profile, subscription history, speeches, practice session metrics, and your support requests.
- If any part of the export cannot be produced, the entire download fails rather than handing you a silently incomplete file.
- Replies exchanged over support email are not in the file. Ask support if you need those too.
Deletion is self-serve and immediate. Your content, sessions, and support requests leave the live database. Billing records stay only as long as tax law requires.
Cancel any active subscription in Manage billing before deleting your account. Deletion does not stop Stripe charges on its own.
- Select Delete account.
- Type DELETE in the confirmation field.
- Select Permanently delete. Your account is removed immediately and you are signed out.
Lapsed and read-only accounts
When a subscription ends or a trial is fully used, your account becomes read-only. You can still sign in, browse your library, read your speeches, and export your data. The editor, practice modes, and AI features are paused behind a prompt to choose a plan.
Your writing is never held hostage. A lapsed account keeps everything you created, and the export button works the same way it always did. To restore full access, choose a plan from the pricing page.
Organization admin tools
If you are an owner or admin, the Organization page shows the full roster, pending seat requests, and invite tools. Regular members see only their own access card.
- Pending requests appear in their own card. Approve or decline each one. A pending request holds a seat until you decide.
- The Members card lists everyone with an active seat, their join date, how they joined (email invite, invite link, domain, one-time link, or added by Rhetoric), and their role.
- Revoking a seat frees it immediately. The member's writing stays theirs.
- Three invite methods: personal email invites (single-use, tied to the address), a shareable invite link (with optional approval), and printable one-time QR cards.
Verified domains let people join automatically when they sign up with a matching work or school email. Some organizations require admin approval for domain joins.
Seats, not surveillance: admins manage seats only. They can never see your speeches, transcripts, sessions, or scores. Practice stays private to each member.
The Activity section at the bottom records seat and invite events: seats claimed, approved, declined, or revoked, invites issued or revoked, and domains added or removed.
Common problems
Most account and billing issues are covered by the Help articles below. Here are the ones people run into most often.
- Card declined or payment failed: open Manage billing and update your card. Stripe retries automatically once the card is fixed. See "Manage billing, invoices, cancellation, and refunds" in Help.
- Invite link says expired or already used: ask your organization admin for a fresh one. See "Join or manage a Rhetoric organization" in Help.
- Forgot your password: use Forgot password on the sign-in page. The reset link expires after one hour. See "Fix sign-in, activation, and password problems" in Help.
- Want a refund: your first payment has a 14-day window. Write to support with the word "refund". See "Manage billing, invoices, cancellation, and refunds" in Help.
- Not sure what the trial includes: one audit, one freestyle session, and three live debates, with no card and no time limit. See "What the free trial includes" in Help.
- Concerned about what Rhetoric stores: Rhetoric never stores audio. What persists is your speeches, transcripts, practice metrics, and account state. See "Your voice, your data: export and deletion" in Help.
